Here Gerald Ford appears as Noah, with the Republican elephant aboard a crowded ark, and the caption "Hurry it up, will you, Noah?" asks him to move faster. Patrick Oliphant drew it for the *Denver Post* and dated it November 3, 1974, two days before midterm congressional elections. Ford had taken office in August after Richard Nixon resigned, and by fall he was facing high inflation and a Republican Party weakened by Watergate. The cartoon uses the flood story to make that pressure concrete: the party is waiting for a leader to act while the waters keep rising.
