Herblock's caption, "Dick and Dad will tell me all I need to know," takes its cue from George W. Bush's reliance on his running mate, Dick Cheney, and his father, former president George H.W. Bush, for guidance on world affairs. During the 2000 presidential campaign, critics questioned how much Bush knew about foreign policy, and the joke drew on that doubt. Herblock, the Washington Post cartoonist who won three Pulitzer Prizes, worked in pen, ink and crayon to make his points quickly and sharply. The drawing is a reminder of how much the campaign turned on whether voters trusted a candidate's grasp of the wider world.
