Herblock's drawing places John F. Kennedy, Harold Macmillan and Nikita Khrushchev alongside a jinn, or genie, and a rising mushroom cloud, a pairing that casts nuclear testing as a bargain no one can fully control. The title, "How about one more try?", points to the early-1960s effort to end atmospheric weapons tests, which led to the 1963 Limited Test Ban Treaty. Herbert Block, the Washington Post cartoonist known as Herblock, used simple symbols like this to explain complicated policy to newspaper readers. The drawing is a good example of how political cartoons of the period turned arms control into a single, pointed question.
