I am not a crook" is the line Richard Nixon used in November 1973, when he insisted to a group of newspaper editors that he was not a dishonest man, and Herblock turned that sentence into the title of this drawing. Herbert Block, who signed his work simply "Herblock," was the longtime editorial cartoonist of the *Washington Post*, and his ink-and-graphite cartoons became a sharp commentary on the Watergate scandal. Around 1974, as the investigation into the break-in and the cover-up deepened, the subjects of corruption and money dominated political news, and cartoons like this one framed the president's denial as something readers should weigh against the evidence. The white highlights over pencil underdrawing show the careful, layered method Herblock used before publication.
