The caption borrows its rhythm from "Ol' Man River," the stevedore song in the 1927 musical *Show Boat*, and turns "Tote dat barge, lift dat bale" into a call to end the Montgomery bus boycott and ride the buses again. The boycott began in December 1955, after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat, and Black residents of the city stayed off the buses for more than a year. Herbert Block, the Washington Post cartoonist known as Herblock, drew often against segregation, and the layered ink, graphite and opaque white on this sheet show the care he put into his work.
