The caption names the subjects: a medal presented by Gen. Barry Goldwater, the Arizona senator who was the Republican presidential nominee in 1964 and a retired Air Force general, to Gerald Ford, who was then president and seeking election in his own right. The drawing is by Herblock, the pen name of Herbert Block, the Washington Post cartoonist who won three Pulitzer Prizes. Its subject is party allegiance, a question that sharpened in 1976 as Ford faced a primary challenge from Ronald Reagan for the Republican nomination.
