Among Cold War cartoons, few tie three world leaders to a single mushroom cloud quite like this one. Mao Zedong, Leonid Brezhnev and Lyndon B. Johnson are named in its record, and the cloud points to Chinese nuclear weapons testing in the 1960s. Herblock, the longtime editorial cartoonist of the *Washington Post*, drew the work around 1965, a year after China's first atomic test in October 1964 made it the fifth nuclear power. The drawing shows how editorial cartoonists of the period used a single familiar symbol to comment on fears of a widening arms race.
