Khrushchev's 1956 boast that the Soviets would "bury" the West is the line Mauldin turns back on the Soviet premier here, showing him sinking in quicksand while President Kennedy issues a warning. The drawing ran in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on July 26, 1961, during the tense standoff over Berlin, just a day after Kennedy addressed the nation on the crisis and asked for larger defense spending. Mauldin, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner best known for his World War II Willie and Joe cartoons, brings the same wry skepticism to Cold War politics.
