This pencil sketch, dated May 5, 1864, shows a column on the march along the road toward the North Anna River, a Virginia waterway that would become a battleground later that month. The date falls at the start of Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign, when the Army of the Potomac crossed the Rapidan River and pushed south into Virginia, beginning weeks of nearly continuous marching and fighting. The title, "Washing day," points to the ordinary chores soldiers managed even on the move, such as laundering shirts during a halt. Drawings made in the field like this one give a direct record of daily army life that official reports rarely captured.
