Staged on the steps of the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C., this tableau was presented by a women's suffrage group on March 3, 1913, the day before Woodrow Wilson's inauguration. The procession was organized to press for a federal woman suffrage amendment, and its living tableaux used costumed figures to dramatize the cause. Large, often hostile crowds surrounded the marchers, and police struggled to keep order, a failure that drew national attention to the movement.
