The particular thing here is the cash room vault itself, a working space in the Treasury building in Washington, D.C., where the office kept the day-to-day funds it needed to operate. The National Photo Company made thousands of pictures of federal offices and the city in the early twentieth century, and this print belongs to that large, mostly commercial body of work. Vaults of this kind were heavy, closely watched rooms, and images like this one document how government money was physically stored and handled before modern banking systems and electronic records changed those routines.
