Unlike the academy's parade grounds and buildings that usually turn up in views of West Point, this print shows the inside of a cadet's living quarters, captured in 1882. It comes from an album kept by the Class of 1882, where it appears on page 69 under the name Edw. Burr, which suggests it was a keepsake made for a cadet's classmates. Cadet rooms in the barracks were small and plainly furnished, reflecting the academy's emphasis on discipline and order over comfort. Photographs like this are useful for researchers interested in daily life at the academy in the 1880s, when the cadets' routines were tightly regulated.
