This caricature shows Boris Youjanin, the director of The Blue Blouse, drawn in ink and watercolor by Al Hirschfeld, whose record carries the inscription "Moscow 28." The Blue Blouse was a Soviet agitprop troupe that staged short, topical sketches with a politically pointed edge, and its visit to the United States in 1928 drew wide attention. Hirschfeld, who became famous for his line portraits of stage performers, used exaggerated lines and minimal detail to capture a sitter's character, and this sheet was published in October 1928. Its subject, a theater director rather than a performer on stage, is part of the record's focus on the actors and figures of the period.
