The plate cuts the great Salle des fêtes of the Palais du Trocadéro in section, exposing the hall's height and interior structure in a way no exterior view could. The palace stood on the Chaillot hill across the Seine from the Champ de Mars and was built for the Exposition universelle of 1878, with Gabriel Davioud and Jules Bourdais among its architects. This engraving by Bordet et Hibon appeared as plate 12 in the second volume of the official *Monographie* of the exposition's buildings, published in Paris in 1882. Its printed scale marks it as a technical record meant for study, not simply a picture.
