Three older women in traditional dress are posed together in this group portrait, made in Everett, Washington, on July 26, 1915. The photographer, J.A. Juleen, gave the image the title *Three pioneers* and registered it for copyright that year, which frames the sitters as figures of the region's early settlement history. The record links them to the Salishan peoples of the Pacific Northwest, and their clothing is the main thing to notice, since portrait photographers of the 1910s often recorded Indigenous dress as a subject in its own right.
