Few portraits of Yakama women from this period carry a title as openly admiring as "The Belle of the Yakimas," which presents its sitter as a local beauty rather than a named individual. La Roche, a Seattle studio photographer, made the image around 1899, and its registration with the U.S. Copyright Office suggests it was meant for commercial distribution. Photographers in the Pacific Northwest at the time often produced studies of Native sitters for tourists and collectors, and the flattering title shows how such pictures framed their subjects for viewers far from the reservation communities they depicted.
