Saguaro gatherers at work is the subject here, with the Maricopa people of Arizona shown harvesting fruit from the giant cactus that grows across the Sonoran Desert. Edward S. Curtis made the photograph in 1907 as part of his multi-volume project documenting Native American life, and it reflects his interest in traditional subsistence practices. For the Maricopa and neighboring peoples, the saguaro's summer fruit was an important seasonal food, gathered with long poles and processed into syrup, and it also held ceremonial significance. The image records a practice that was already changing as the region's economy shifted.
