Labeled simply "Members of gaucho tribe, Argentina," this print shows men from the cattle-herding horsemen of the Argentine pampas, though "tribe" is a loose term that reflects how outside observers often described them. The gauchos built their working lives around horses, cattle, and open grassland, and by the late 1800s the spread of fencing and estancias was reshaping that world. The picture comes from the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, made by travel writers who documented distant peoples and places for American readers in the decades around 1900.
