Dock scenes like this one were a staple of the Carpenter travel photographs, and this view of the waterfront at Buenos Aires shows the port that made the city one of South America's busiest. Through the early twentieth century, Argentina shipped large quantities of beef, wheat, and wool to Europe, and the harbor was the point where that trade came together. Frank Carpenter, a journalist who wrote widely about foreign countries, and his wife Frances assembled such images to illustrate their lectures and writing about commerce and daily life abroad. The picture's date range, between 1890 and 1923, places it during the period when the city's port was growing rapidly.
