Felix Frankfurter, the Austrian-born legal scholar who later served on the Supreme Court, is the subject of this portrait, which is held in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division. The caption card gives no date, so the sitting itself cannot be placed with confidence. Frankfurter (1882-1965) taught at Harvard Law School for much of his career, advised Franklin D. Roosevelt during the New Deal, and was appointed to the Court in 1939. Portraits from across his public life survive in archives like this one, and the sitter's long career makes it likely the picture was taken in one of the decades when he was a prominent figure in Washington or Cambridge.
