The caption card's geography note points to the docks at Buenos Aires, the port on the Río de la Plata. In these decades the city was expanding its harbor to handle a fast-growing trade in grain, wool and chilled and frozen beef, much of it bound for Europe, and much of the investment and engineering behind the work came from Britain. Frank and Frances Carpenter, a husband-and-wife team who traveled widely and lectured on foreign lands, gathered photographs like this one to document commerce abroad. Views of working waterfronts such as this were meant to show how a rising South American economy moved its goods to world markets.
