Georges Jacques Danton, the lawyer and orator who became one of the most forceful voices of the French Revolution, is the subject of this portrait print, signed by the engraver Geoffroy. It was issued in Paris by the publisher Furne, whose firm produced many illustrated editions and portrait prints in the nineteenth century, though the exact date is uncertain. Danton helped drive the Revolution's early radical phase and was later condemned by the Revolutionary Tribunal and guillotined in April 1794. Nineteenth-century portraits like this one often revived his image as a symbol of revolutionary passion and of the Terror's political struggles.
