Gib Crockett's cartoon puts Uncle Sam at the center of a question that was pressing on Americans in late 1966: whether the peace efforts over Vietnam had any life left in them. The drawing was published in the Washington Star on November 29, 1966, and it uses the symbolic figure of Uncle Sam and a dove, the common emblem of peace, to make its point. Crockett was a longtime editorial cartoonist, and his work from this period reflects the sharp public debate over the war, when editorial pages often used such familiar symbols to comment on Washington's policy.
