This lithograph takes its title from a dice game, "Craps," and its caption renders dialogue in exaggerated phonetic dialect, a convention of the minstrel stage. Issued by Currier & Ives in New York in 1890 as part of the *Darktown* comics series, it belongs to a body of cartoons that caricatured Black Americans as comic, idle, and gullible. Such prints were widely sold in the decades after Reconstruction and helped spread demeaning stereotypes. Today historians study them as evidence of how racist imagery shaped popular entertainment and public attitudes.
