A volunteer fire company is the comic subject of this hand-colored 1894 lithograph, whose caption, written in exaggerated dialect, casts the men as bumbling figures who stop for a rest instead of fighting the blaze. Currier & Ives issued the Darktown comics in the 1880s and 1890s, and they drew on minstrel-show stereotypes to portray Black urban life as chaotic and ridiculous. Historians now study the series as evidence of how demeaning racial imagery circulated as popular entertainment in American print culture, and this sheet is best viewed with that history in mind.
