A New York lithograph of an Irish political writer is an unusual subject for Nathaniel Currier's shop, which is better known for scenes of American life. Charles Gavan Duffy edited *The Nation* in Dublin, the weekly that gave voice to the Young Ireland movement, and he was prosecuted by British authorities after the failed 1848 rising. The motto printed beneath his name, "Educate that you may be free," reflects his conviction that schooling and literacy were the foundation of political independence. Currier's portrait would have appealed to the Irish emigrant community in New York, which followed events in Ireland closely at the time.
