Robert Schumann, the German composer and critic, is shown here in a photogravure made after an existing portrait and published as one plate in a Polish portfolio of composers, the "Teka kompozytorow." That context matters: the image was made for a collection of musical biographies rather than as a stand-alone study, so it reflects how nineteenth-century readers were introduced to great composers through engraved and photomechanical likenesses. Schumann, who lived from 1810 to 1856, was a central figure of the Romantic era, known for his piano works and for founding the journal Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik. The print's date range places it in the decades after his death, when his reputation was being consolidated.
