Robert A. Taft, the Ohio lawyer and later long-serving U.S. senator, is the figure this 1930 portrait shows, dated February 5 of that year, when he was a rising figure in Ohio politics. He would go on to be known as "Mr. Republican" for his influence on conservative policy in the Senate, and his 1952 bid for the party's presidential nomination came close to succeeding. The record is brief and notes that its caption-card data is unverified, so the exact occasion for the sitting is not recorded. Portraits of Taft from this period are useful for seeing how a Midwestern professional politician presented himself as the Depression deepened.
