This portrait of Alfred Moore, a North Carolina lawyer and Revolutionary War officer, was engraved by J. Veagle and printed in the July 1820 issue of the *Literary and Scientific Repository and Critical Review*, a decade after Moore's death in 1810. Moore served as North Carolina's attorney general and then as an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1800 until he resigned in 1804 because of ill health. Because the plate was made after he died, it likely drew on an earlier likeness or a secondhand source, which is worth keeping in mind when judging its fidelity. The magazine setting also shows how early American periodicals used engraved portraits to honor public figures.
