A Nome photographer, H.G. Kaiser, took this c1912 portrait of Alaska Native mothers and infants and registered it for copyright, which is why the record carries a Copyright Office number. The title "Madonna of the North" invokes the Renaissance painting tradition of the Virgin and Child, casting the women as a sacred maternal image in a remote northern setting. The subject labels, which use the period's terms for Indigenous Alaskans, reflect how such photographs were typically catalogued and marketed in the 1910s, and they are worth reading with that context in mind.
