Pictured here are tipis of the Sihasapa, the people better known as the Blackfoot, who lived across the northern Great Plains in what is now Montana and southern Alberta. The conical lodges were built from poles and hide, designed to be taken down and moved with the bison herds that sustained the Plains nations. By the 1920s, many Blackfoot families lived on reservations and in more settled communities, so photographs from this period often show traditional dwellings still in use alongside changing ways of life. Keep in mind that such images were made by outside photographers, whose choices of framing and subject shaped how the people were portrayed.
