The 1889 Exposition universelle in Paris gave its terrace of the liberal arts a place in print as well as in person, and this wood engraving by Auguste Lepère was made to illustrate Frantz Jourdain's article on it in the *Revue illustrée*. The fair, held to mark the centenary of the French Revolution, drew millions of visitors to the Champ de Mars and the Trocadéro, and its buildings were debated in the press as closely as they were visited. Jourdain's piece belonged to a series on the exposition's architecture, and Lepère's engraving records the terrace in the fine, precise line the periodicals of the period prized. This impression is signed in ink and numbered 5 of 35, which marks it as one of a small run of pulls.
