The title, "Squaw wanted," is a period caption transcribed from the item, and its language reflects the racist attitudes common in commercial photographs of the time. The picture shows Alaska Native domestic life in Nome, a town that boomed after gold was found on the Seward Peninsula in 1898 and drew thousands of prospectors. Laundry was a common source of paid work for women in gold-rush towns, and images like this one were often marketed to outside audiences as views of a distant frontier. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which explains the catalog number in its record.
