Godey's Lady's Book was among the most widely read American magazines of the 1860s, and its monthly fashion plates were hand-colored or printed in color to show readers the latest styles from Paris and New York. This February 1862 plate, engraved by the firm of Capewell & Kimmel, shows women's dress at the moment when wide skirts supported by hoops were at their fullest. Such plates were often used by home dressmakers, who copied the cut and trimmings from the engraving. Color engravings like this one were costly to produce, which is part of why they remain prized records of Civil War-era fashion.
