Unlike many portraits of Native sitters from this period, this one names the people in its title: a Klickitat man, photographed in The Dalles, Oregon, a river town on the Columbia where Klickitat families traded and gathered for generations. The record notes his clothing and dress, which is the main focus of the image. Around 1899, studio portraits of Native men and women in traditional or partly traditional dress were popular with photographers and buyers, and many were sold as souvenirs. The sitter's name is not recorded, so the picture stands as much for the period's commercial portrait trade as for the individual who sat for it.
