Celilo Falls, on the Columbia River in what is now The Dalles area of Oregon, was one of the oldest continuously used fishing grounds in North America, and this c1931 print captures it in the years before the falls were lost. The record credits the Elite Studio and lists fishing and the river among its subjects, pointing to the Indigenous fishers who used platforms and dip nets there for thousands of years. Notably, the image dates from just before The Dalles Dam flooded the falls in 1957, so it documents a site that later disappeared beneath the reservoir.
