Kaaterskill Falls, shown here under the older spelling "Catterskill," plunges in two main drops through the Catskill Mountains of New York and was among the region's most admired sights by the mid-1800s. Travelers reached it from the Catskill Mountain House, a resort hotel that drew visitors into the mountains and helped make the falls a favorite subject for painters and printmakers. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive lithographs of American scenery to a broad public, issued many views like this one, and this hand-colored sheet is listed as number 0952 in the firm's catalog raisonné.
