Few waterfalls in the Northeast drew as many nineteenth-century visitors as Kaaterskill Falls, the cascade in New York's Catskill Mountains that this print spells "Catterskill." The falls drop more than 200 feet in two stages, and their wild setting made them a favorite of Hudson River School painters and of travelers staying at the nearby Catskill Mountain House. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for inexpensive lithographs, issued many scenic views like this one for a popular market, and this impression was finished by hand with color, which made each copy look somewhat individual. The record dates it only to the firm's working life, which ran until 1907.
