A dove poised to leave its roost gives this Currier & Ives lithograph its subject, the moment of departure the title names. Carrier pigeons, bred to fly back to their home lofts, carried messages over long distances before the telegraph and telephone reached most households, and the homing bird suited a public that valued loyalty and the pull of home. The New York firm issued its sheets in large runs for a mass market, and this example was finished by hand in color, a common practice for its popular prints of the period.
