Nathaniel Currier's hand-colored lithograph *The Bible and temperance* ties the scriptural text to the antebellum temperance cause, a title that signals its moral purpose before any detail of the scene is read. The print bears only Currier's name as publisher, which places it before the firm became Currier & Ives in 1857. Temperance societies had spread widely since the American Temperance Society was founded in 1826, and printmakers like Currier produced many sermonizing images for a churchgoing middle-class market. Prints of this kind show how reform arguments reached ordinary households.
