Seal Rocks off Point Lobos, on the Monterey Peninsula, is the subject that sets this hand-colored lithograph apart from the many Currier & Ives views of eastern towns and rivers on the same board. Published by the New York firm Currier & Ives, which issued prints from roughly 1834 to 1907, it belongs to a series of pictorial scenes that presented the American West to buyers who would never see it in person. The rocky coast and its offshore outcrops, where sea lions haul out, were a striking feature for nineteenth-century viewers, and the hand coloring adds the blues and greens of the Pacific surf and sky.
