Tents are the focus of this July 5, 1864, view of the James River at City Point, Virginia, a spot that now falls within the city of Hopewell. That summer City Point served as the Union Army's main supply depot and as the base for Ulysses S. Grant's operations against Petersburg, a few miles inland. Wharves and steamers there moved troops, horses and provisions toward the siege lines, so the camps in a scene like this housed a steady flow of soldiers and support staff. The print is a later gelatin silver copy, so its sharp detail reflects the photographic technology of the 1860s as well as the moment it recorded.
