Three small scenes of the James River share this narrow sheet, two of them labeled near or at Fort Powhatan, where a battery was posted at times. The inscriptions date the Powhatan views to 1861 and the river view to 1864, so the artist returned to this stretch of water during the war. The reverse holds four quick steamboat sketches, one identified as the *Paul Jones*, and the drawing was once catalogued under Alfred Waud's numbering. Waud sketched for *Harper's Weekly* and other papers, and studies like this one gave readers a view of riverbank defenses they could not see for themselves.
