James A. Reed appears here as a newly installed United States senator from Missouri, photographed around the time he took his seat in 1911. A Kansas City lawyer who had served as that city's mayor, Reed became known in Washington for sharp oratory and for his later opposition to the League of Nations. The copyright notice credits Miss Reinke, and the portrait reflects the studio images that officials of the 1910s commonly sat for to circulate in newspapers and campaign material.
