Taken between 1895 and 1896, this view of the St. Paul River shows a waterway about 25 miles from the Atlantic coast of Liberia. The American Colonization Society, which had founded settlements on the Liberian coast in the 1820s as a home for free Black Americans, kept the photograph in its collection. The river was an important route for travel and trade between the coastal settlements and the interior, and images like this one record a landscape that shaped daily life there in the late nineteenth century.
