Catalogued as No. 163 in the American Colonization Society's Series B, this portrait shows a man identified as a Mandingo warrior from Liberia, posed in clothing chosen to look martial. The Mandingo are a Mande-speaking people whose communities long predated the American-founded colony. Images of this kind were often used to present African subjects to American audiences, so it is worth asking who arranged the pose and why. Dated to about 1895 to 1896, it documents late nineteenth-century portrait practice.
