A single amber bottle labeled Enovid is the subject here, captured in 1962, a few years after the drug arrived on the American market. Made by G.D. Searle & Company, Enovid was the first oral contraceptive approved by the Food and Drug Administration, in 1960, and it quickly became the best-known symbol of the pill. Rather than a person or a place, the print records a commercial product, which makes it a useful view of how the pharmaceutical industry packaged and promoted birth control in the early 1960s.
