Bill Mauldin's 1946 cartoon "Man frightened by the Red scare" is an ink drawing over pencil, dated to the publication week of September 5. Mauldin was best known for the wartime infantry characters Willie and Joe, and after the war he turned to editorial cartooning. The record ties this drawing to three subjects: anti-communism, the Ku Klux Klan, and snakes. Those themes reflect a period when the Red Scare was growing and the Klan was regaining members in parts of the country. The cartoon's comment on fear is worth noting as a snapshot of that moment.
