Saul Bass's poster for *The Man with the Golden Arm* builds its advertising around a stylized, angular arm rather than a conventional star portrait. The 1955 United Artists release, directed by Otto Preminger and adapted from Nelson Algren's novel, followed Frank Sinatra as a card dealer struggling to stay off heroin. Its frank treatment of addiction drew objections from the Production Code office, making the film a notable case in Hollywood's gradual move toward serious subjects. The poster's bold shapes and limited color show why Bass became one of the most recognized designers in American film advertising.
