Lilies, a cemetery, and a mother with children set this Frank Brangwyn poster apart from the soldier-and-flag imagery common in British war art. Printed in London around 1915, this French-language lithograph is an appeal on behalf of orphaned children, and its text promises a home, maternal tenderness, schooling in the country, a suitable trade for each child, and the religion of their fathers. Brangwyn, born in Bruges, drew on his ties to Belgium, and the poster shows how wartime appeals used images of innocence and loss to raise support for civilian victims of the fighting.
